Notifications are optional, but highly recommended.
TapCounter notifies you, for example, when data collection is impaired or an app update is available.
If you allow notifications, you increase the chance of providing more accurate data for research.
1. Go to Settings / General / Keyboard / Keyboards
2. Add the TapCounter keyboard
3. Enable ‘TapCounter’ and ‘Allow Full Access’.
4. Confirm by clicking on ‘Allow’ in the pop-up window.*
5. Go back to the TapCounter app by clicking ‘<TapCounter' in the upper left corner of the screen.
A green circle with a check mark shows you that the keyboard has been added successfully.
Click Next.
This information is provided anonymously and helps us improve our algorithms.
By signing up your device, you begin to provide your study with data and contribute to research.
1. Click on Scan QR Code.
Alternatively, copy & paste the participation ID into the respective field.
2. Allow TapCounter to use the camera.
3. Scan the QR code you received from your study manager.
Please contact your study manager if you haven't received a QR code or a participation ID.
4. Click on Participate to complete the registration.
A green circle with a check mark shows you that the participation has successfully registered.
Click Next.
Note: You can skip this step by clicking Next directly. You can connect your device later by clicking Participation in the app menu.
If you grant access, your research study will have access to data from the CoreMotion API (includes raw accelerometer, pedometer, gyroscope, …) that includes also MotionActivity (such as walking, on a car, on a train, …).
If you grant access, your research study will have access to data from the HealthKit SleepAnalysis API (for instance sleep onset and wake up time).
Recommended set up for Health Update Usage:
a) Open the Apple Health App.
b) Open Sleep.
c) Enable ‘Sleep Schedule’.
d) Click ‘Add Schedule’.
e) Scroll down and enable ‘Track Time in Bed with iPhone’.
The default keyboard language is set according to your phone's operating system language. If the language is not available, the keyboard is set to English US.
The following languages are available:
• Danish: QWERTY (Danish)
• Dutch: QWERTY
• English: QWERTY (US)
• French: AZERTY, QWERTZ, QWERTY (French)
• German: QWERTZ (German), QWERTZ
• Italian: QWERTY
• Spanish: QWERTY (Spanish)
To download an additional keyboard language or change layout:
1. Tap the top left gear icon on the TapCounter keyboard.
2. Select the desired language and tap Download.
3. Select the desired layout or directly tap Activate; the language is automatically activated.
To switch the language while using the TapCounter keyboard, swipe the space bar on the keyboard.
All downloaded languages can be accessed via the space bar.
• Make sure you use the TapCounter keyboard in as many apps as possible to get accurate and complete tap data for your research study. Using other keyboards results in incomplete data.
A blue gear icon in the top left corner of the keyboard shows you that the TapCounter keyboard is active.
• You may need to switch the keyboard manually for each chat initially.
• The keyboard requires a learning phase of a few weeks. During this time, auto-correct may not be as accurate as you're used to.
• You can teach the keyboard new words in two ways. a) Tap the word under « », on the left side. b) Rewrite automatically corrected words manually.
The iOS TapCounter requires iOS 16.0 or later.
The device can be connected to a study either during onboarding or later in the app by clicking Participation in the app menu.

Yes. Just sign up your other devices with the same participation ID that you received from your study manager for the sign up of your first device.

The home screen of the TapCounter app assists you in tracking regular usage of the TapCounter keyboard. It allows you to monitor your keyboard activity by providing:
-total number of taps recorded within the last 4 days.
-how many apps you use the TapCounter keyboard in compared to the average population.
For more detailed data, select the More tab. The History shows the recorded taps over different time periods.
If your keyboard activity decreases significantly or is far below the population average, you should check whether the TapCounter keyboard is (still) active in your apps.

Open the app, go to Settings and click Copy my ID.
Be aware, that this is your unique ID and it is linked to your data. Please only share it with those you trust.
Open the app, go to Settings and click Sync now.
The app is very data efficient: data syncing requires very little data usage, ranging from a few KB to a few MB per month i.e. the size of a single photo captured by your phone camera. One year of user data is approximately 10MB.
No. The app only requires internet connection to sync your data. It is designed to sync data using WiFi, and after multiple failed attempts it will tap into the 3G or 4G data.
The app is power efficient and uses less than 2% of your phone battery. It has no impact on your phone speed.
1. The model of the mobile device on which the app is installed.
2. The timestamp of each touchscreen interaction on the provided keyboard.
3. The time zone of the user’s phone location.
4. Timestamp of the ‘delete’ key.
5. If you swipe or use autocorrection on the provided keyboard.
6. The battery log of the mobile device.
7. Usage patterns, and performance and stability indicators of the app itself.
8. Optional: Year of birth and gender.

To stop data collection, you can delete data and stop recording in the app settings or uninstall the app. Alternatively, you can also pause data collection in the app settings.
Please inform your study manager if you wish to officially withdraw from the study.

In some messenger apps, you may need to manually switch to the TapCounter keyboard for each chat initially. Once switched, the chat will remember your keyboard choice for future use.
The keyboard requires a learning phase of a few weeks. During this time, auto-correct may not be as accurate as you're used to. The system keyboard has already gone through its learning phase, which is why you might notice a difference initially.
a) Tap the word under « », on the left side.
b) Manually rewrite an auto-corrected word.
The label 'Acx' on the keyboard space bar indicates that autocorrection is disabled.
1. Go to Phone Settings / General / Keyboard / Keyboards.
2. Tap Edit.
3. Tap and hold on the three horizontal lines, then drag up or down to change the order.
If you use keyboards other than the TapCounter keyboard, no tap data will be recorded, leading to incomplete data. We recommend using the TapCounter keyboard in as many apps as possible for accurate and complete tap data.
If you don't want to use any other keyboard, we recommend deleting keyboards with Latin letters in the settings after installing the TapCounter keyboard.
1. Go to Phone Settings / General / Keyboard / Keyboards.
2. Swipe left on a keyboard, or tap Edit.
3. Tap the red circle next to the keyboard you want to remove, tap Delete, then confirm.
When you uninstall the TapCounter app, the associated keyboard will also be automatically removed from your device.
